1. Listening - 1, 24 + 1 By May 20

1. Listening
1. CLB5L Listen to a phone message from a medical receptionist (Vocaroo) changing the date and time of an appointment
    1. Who is this message from, and for whom?

  • This message from Tom, for Elm Rand.
    2. Write down the old and new appointment information.
  • Old appointment is this Thursday. New appointment is "Sept. 21. 3 Pm".
    3. How does the speaker feel? How do you know?
  • The speaker's feeling was calm for changing the date of appointment. Because his words don't have sorry, apologize, and other honorific words.
    4. Check your calendar and plan a call-back response. What better date/time can you suggest? What good reason can you give? Write out your notes.
  • Hi, this is Elm Rand. Thanks for letting me know. However, I will have a travel in September. I will come back on September 25. Would you mind I go to clinic on September 26?  Thank your. Have a good day.
    5. Ask yourself: Did you identify specific factual details and implied meanings; formal and casual style and register; language functions; emotional states from tone and intonation; the situation and relationships between speakers; and feelings such as interest, likes/dislikes, preferences.

  • Sometimes, I can't change my Chinese language habit. Maybe someone thinks it is not polite.
